A. The main causes of this are downdraughts or poor and partially blocked flues. You should seek professional advice on the air tight nature of the appliance and register plate. The effectiveness of the chimney draw and flue location. This problem can be cured by effective chimney maintenance and/or the fitting of an anti-downdraught cowl to the top of the chimney pot.
Q.Does my chimney need to be lined?
A. In the main the answer would be YES. It is possible for a stove to work effectively if it is installed using a sound existing chimney but adequate provision must be given for the effective maintenance of the chimney for sweeping. It must also be noted that a stove will work and draw much more effectively with a liner and the number of deposits left in the flue will therefore be greatly reduced.
Q. Do I need to fit an airvent if the stove output is over 5KW?
A. Yes. As part of the current building regulations all appliances with a KW rating above 5KW need to be provided with additional ventilation.
A. The main differences between the two materials are as follows;
Cast iron once heated retains the heat for a much longer time.
Cast iron stoves can be formed with more detailing and aesthetic appeal .
A cast iron stove used correctly should last a lifetime but individual sections of the stove can be replaced if needed. With a welded body this is not possible with a steel stove.
A. Every stove is different and the fuel used, if wood, can vary in its burn time but if the firebox is of sufficient size and the operator experienced in the usage of the stove then with most stoves overnight burning can be achieved.
A. With global warming and the usage of fossil fuels a ‘burning’ issue it is comforting to know that woodburning stoves are both carbon neutral and sustainable.
A. I always tell my potential clients that they must think of it in the same way as buying a car. If you buy the best you will have a product that will last and be trouble free. A stove is often the focal point of the room and therefore the home so one that operates efficiently and retains a clear window is essential for continued satisfaction. The saying ‘you only get what you pay for’, is very true with respect to stoves.
